May 5, 2024: Alleluia, Christ is Risen! The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia! Amen. Some of you know that I received my Master of Divinity from the seminary of Drew University, a Methodist institution. I am very proud of that, as the classes were filled with people from many denominations, cultures, languages, races, and theological points of view. So, as a Drew seminary grad, my Facebook feed was exploding with the posts of former classmates rejoicing in news out of the United Methodist Church General Conference (similar to our General Convention, except theirs are every four years, rather than every three years). For one, the tension and argumentative nature of the meetings were gone. Since the recent departure of those who were steadfast in their belief that homosexuality was “incompatible with Christian teaching,” there was less disagreement and more joy. April 28, 2024: Alleluia, Christ is Risen! The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia! Amen. While it happens more often than we realize, how strange it is to hear two places in one of our scripture readings that feature so heavily in our news cycle today: Jerusalem and Gaza. Stranger still is what takes place. In the reading from the Acts of the Apostles, we hear about Philip, one of the seven anointed deacons (as opposed to Philip one of the original 12 apostles). He is told by an angel of God to travel on the road that connects Jerusalem to Gaza, and here the author of this sequel to the gospel of Luke wants the reader to know something – that this is a “wilderness road.” On that road is a chariot carrying a Eunuch a court official of the Queen of what was then called Ethiopians, who was returning…
April 21, 2024: Alleluia, Christ is Risen! The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia! Amen. It is Good Shepherd Sunday, which always is the fourth Sunday of Easter. Of course, the obvious clues to this are Psalm 23 and the passage from the Gospel of John. Many, even those who have never been to church, know the words of the Psalm – we say it at services, especially funerals, at hospital bedsides, and for many, it is a personal mantra. The gospel is less familiar outside of the church, but still an image many grew up with for Jesus. In the fourth gospel, the authors include seven “I Am” statements one of which we heard today, where Jesus says “I am the good shepherd…” He also uses other ones – like door or gate, vine and bread – but we don’t do a Door Sunday.
