Police & Community Meeting – Sep 29

Please join Chief Sheila Byron-Lagattuta, Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Chief of Detectives Quovella Spruill, and Chief of the Civil Rights Unit for the United States Attorney’s Office – New Jersey District, Assistant US Attorney Michael Campion, along with members of the Glen Ridge Police Department, for an opportunity to unite Police Officers and the community members they serve.

The event will be held in the gymnasium (Parish Hall) of the Christ Episcopal Church, located at 74 Park Avenue in Glen Ridge, at 7:00 PM on Thursday, September 29, 2016.

Parking will be available in the Hillside Parking Lot at the intersection of Bloomfield Avenue and Hillside Avenue. The entrance to the event will be at the double doors on the Bloomfield Avenue side of the building, which is handicapped accessible. Light refreshments will be provided.

Today’s second reading is from the First Epistle of John, chapter 3. Though there is no consensus on the authorship of the Epistle, the message is about love and fellowship with God.

Today’s Gospel is from John is from the section called the “Book of Signs” in Christian scholarship. It is named that because of 7 notable events, often called signs or miracles

Today’s Processional Hymn is “Praise the Lord, rise up rejoicing” by the 20th century English schoolmaster and clergyman, Howard Charles Adie Grant. Grant played first-class cricket for Warwickshire between 1919 and 1922.

The first reading is from the book of Acts, chapter 4 which is from the section of the book about the beginnings of the church. More specifically, Peter and John before the Sanhedrin (or legislative and judicial assembly of elders).

Psalm 23 is probably one of the most recognizable Psalms, “Dominus legit me” or “The Lord is my shepherd.” Jewish educator Tziporah Heller notes it is best known due to its “universal message to trust in God, and its simplicity”

The Recessional Hymn is “The strife is o’er, the battle done” translated by the 19th century English Deacon Francis Pott. Pott’s contributed translations from the Latin and Syriac and original hymns, including “Angel voices ever singing” and “Lift up your heads, eternal gates.”

Spring Parish Work Day will be Saturday May 18th from 9am to 12pm. During Hurricane Ida, we lost many of our plantings around the front of the church, so we will spend this time planting perennials and shrubs, lay mulch in the beds and tidy up a bit. Coffee and lunch will be provided.

My Jesus, I believe that you are truly present in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. I love you above all things, and long for you in my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though you have already come, I embrace you and unite myself entirely to you; never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

Two of our parishioners are going to be presented to the Bishop at the May 11th service. Carol Madden will be confirmed and Ann Watson will be received. The service is at Calvary Episcopal Church in Summit at 10am. Attendees are limited to close family and friends, but we will celebrate Ann and Carol at our service and coffee hour Sunday May 11th. Please join us.

Today’s offertory hymn is “Brother James’ Air” by the 19th century, early 20th century Scottish founder of the Brotherhood of Healers, James Leith Macbeth Bain. Through his Brotherhood of Healers, he and his fellow healers often sang to their patients during healing sessions. In the latter part of his life, he worked among the poor in the slums of Liverpool.

We want to welcome Steve Zimmerman as our interim organist. Steve is a graduate of William Paterson University with a degree in Music Education, concentration in voice and piano. He studied under the direction of world-renowned and Grammy nominated bass-baritone Stephen Bryant and Gary Kirkpatrick. Steven lives with his wife, Stephanie, in Boonton, NJ. You can read more about him at the end of today’s worship bulletin in the announcements section.

Today’s communion hymn is “Shepherd of souls, refresh and bless,” by the late Scottish radical newspaper editor James Montgomery (1771 - 1854). Montgomery protested against slavery, the lot of boy chimney sweeps, and lotteries. He was briefly imprisoned when he printed a song celebrating the fall of the Bastille and again when he described a riot in Sheffield that reflected unfavorably on a military commander. He publish 11 volumes of poetry, mainly his own and at least 400 hymns.

You will hear Mother Diana using female pronouns or non-gendered pronouns for God, when the bulletin has printed in it the traditional all male language. This is to provide a balance, and to invite us all into the understanding that God is not a boy’s name - God is both and neither female or male - we all are made in God’s image - women and men. You may, as you feel called, use the female or non-gendered language too.

Today’s Gospel is from Luke 24 is a continuation of last week’s Gospel from the Book of John, chapter 20, that Jesus appeared to the disciples and said “Peace to you/Peace be unto you” which is a based on the Greek phrase of the Jewish salutation, shalom lekom.

The first reading is from the book of Acts, chapter 3 which records the healing of a disabled person by the apostles Peter and John. It is important to note that this is a continuation of the message that the disciples were able to also do the same miracles as Jesus when they believed.

Today’s offertory hymn is “This Joyful Eastertide” by the 19th century English priest, George Ratcliffe Woodward. Interestingly, he had a very rigid theory on translation that one ought to reproduce the meter and rhyme scheme of the original as well as its contents. This practice did not always produce singable hymns.

The Recessional Hymn is “Good Christians all, rejoice and sing” by the late 19th, early 20th century English priest Cyril Alington. Alington was ordained in the Church of England in 1901. He also had a teaching career which included being headmaster of Shrewsbury School and Eton College. He was also dean of Durham as well as chaplain to the King of England.

Today’s communion hymn is “Let thy Blood in mercy poured” by the late 19th century, early 20th century Scottish Minister, John Brownlie. Brownlie became a member of the local School Board, and later governor of Stranraer High School and Chairman of the Governors in 1901.

May 19th is Pentecost, the ending of the fifty days of Easter. We celebrate the Holy Spirit descending as flames of fire upon the earliest followers of Jesus, and that is why this is often referred to as the birthday of the church. The Holy Spirit is often depicted with images of a dove, but also of fire, and so we wear red on this day to honor the Holy Spirit, whose work within and around us sustains and guides us in our life of love and service.

During Eastertide, Mother Diana will lead a five part series on the Gospel of Mark as Story. The title comes from the text we will use, authored by David Rhoads, Joanna Dewey and Donald Michie. The book may be purchased anywhere books are sold. The formation series will be offered over Zoom on Wednesdays from 7pm to 8:30pm beginning April 17th.
